AWESOME!!!…320 mentor matches!!!
Let’s celebrate!!!! Thank you Wilmington and surrounding areas. You are still making it happen for our kids and our partners. Since July 2009, OTW and its community partners have recruited and trained over 320 mentors. Let’s keep it going. Our goal is the recruitment and training of 500 mentors by July 2012. You can make a tremendous difference by contributing 1 hour a week to mentor a child. Outside the Walls is a program of the Wilmington Area Leadership Foundation (WLF) and funded by the Amachi Mentoring Coalition Project!

Outside the Walls wants adults, 18 years and older to empower young people with
moral support, counsel and friendship. Children in our Community, ages 6-17,
benefit from positive attention and spending time with someone who shares similar
interests. Mentors are great listeners and people who care. “Mentors want to help
young people bring out strengths that are already there.”- www.mentoring.org, 2008.
59% of mentored youth improve their grades and 86% go on to higher education (Proctor
and Gamble). 80% of youth in the juvenile system does not return to the system after being
mentored (Prison Fellowship). Successful mentoring matches can help young people develop
better relationships with their families and other adults (Rhodes et al. 2005, Tierney and Grossman
1995).
In late 2009, Public/Private Ventures in partnership with Dare Mighty Things launched the
Amachi Coalition Project, which was grant funding by the Office of Juvenile Justice and
Delinquency Prevention to provide financial resources, training, and technical assistance to
mentoring organizations in 38 states. Over the 3-year grant period, these programs will create
thousands of new mentoring matches for children impacted by incarceration. WLF is a sub-
award recipient representing North Carolina in this coalition and the program sponsor for
Outside The Walls. The goal is to create at least 250 new mentoring matches by June 30, 2012.
